Sober looks, versatile classics, and sartorial styles are some of the key messages that emerged from the women’s catwalks at this latest New York Fashion Week.
These fashion weeks, as a reflection of our culture, show the current trends and fashion evolution, combining classic and avant-garde elements and providing leading designers from around the world with an unparalleled global platform to showcase their collections.
New York Fashion Week is one of the most anticipated events for fashion enthusiasts, as the top designers appear twice a year to reveal the trends that will soon dominate the runways and the media. So, hello there, fashionista! Let us learn more about NYFW and how it came to be. What is its goal, and what proposals does it make to us this year?
I’m always excited to see and learn about new creations, so let’s go beyond the lights on the catwalk! Perhaps you will find something that complements your style, encourages you to play with your look, inspires you, and from which you can learn. Let’s look at how some firms haven’t just developed “something pretty,” but also good concepts with a vision that regards the user and our environment.
What´s New York Fashion Week?
New York Fashion Week is an event held twice a year to feature designers’ collections for the upcoming fashion season. The event is organized by WME/IMG, the world’s oldest talent agency, as well as a world leader in sports, events, media, and, of course, fashion; this is in collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers America (CFDA), whose membership includes 474 of America’s leading womenswear, menswear, jewelry, and accessory designers.
NYFW is part of Fashion Month, which also covers the fashion weeks in London, Milan, and Paris. It attracts over 230,000 visitors each year and hosts over 300 fashion shows over 7-9 days, making it a fashion industry classic as well as a platform that produces more than 900 million dollars for the city’s economy. Men’s fashion has its own distinct Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week: Men, which we may discuss later.
This event is likewise biannual, however within women’s fashion week, there is generally a day when fashion presentations featuring men’s apparel are conducted, incorporating some young designers.
And when exactly is NYFW?
As previously said, it occurs twice a year.
- The spring/summer collection is released in September, and the fall/winter collection is released in February.
- Before the autumn 2015 season, New York Fashion Week was held at Lincoln Center, which was sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.
- Skylight Clarkson Square and Skylight Moynihan Station are the two new primary headquarters.
- Chelsea Piers and the Park Avenue Armory have also become popular exhibition and event sites, with a few smaller performances sprinkled across midtown Manhattan.
Some fashion shows will also be held at the Museum of Modern Art and the Hammerstein Ballroom. Although NYFW is visible across the city, street style is also a great source of inspiration. Many of these parades take place in TriBeCa and Chelsea, in particular. Walking around these districts during Fashion Week is a lot of fun since you can see the visitors’ really unique attire.
An official invitation is required to attend one of the premium NYFW shows. Designers, celebrities, and influencers are typically invited to these shows, which also include the most fashionable New Yorkers. However, you can stroll into some shows and feel like you’re a part of NYFW.
Some lesser-known but promising designers expose their catwalks to the public, allowing all fashion enthusiasts to view the latest designs and new trends firsthand. Tickets for specific shows can also be obtained online.
But what is its story?
Eleanor Lambert, director of promotion at the New York Dress Institute, founded the inaugural New York Fashion Week in 1943..
Before World War II, Paris was the world´s fashion capital, where shoppers and press alike gathered to see what couturiers would create next. The French capital dominated fashion, with many US-based fashion businesses imitating what was originally seen on the other side of the Atlantic. However, as the world war continued and Paris remained under German occupation, a chance for Americans to establish their own design credentials appeared.
As the war progressed, the goal became to shift attention away from French fashion, to which the fashion business was unable to gain access owing to the armed struggle. It was also meant to provide a platform for American designers, which it accomplished with tremendous success. NYFW is now one of the most well-known fashion events in the world.
- The global rise of street style and blogging also profoundly altered the essence of fashion week, broadening the way fashion was broadcasted and shared.
And now that we know a little bit more about the history and purpose of this big fashion event, it is time to discover new trends. I consider this as an exercise to work on my creativity, to inspire, and to have fun. I genuinely think that watching these fashion shows objectively, considering the evolution of fashion, its pros, and drawbacks, is the best thing we can do if we are interested in these types of issues; fashion weeks should not be a medium that pressures us into impulsive purchases. We don’t need 10,000 new and different looks, just a little inspiration to apply to our daily wardrobe.
Trends, easy dressing, modern romantic and future classics
Let’s be honest, for a while now, and considerably more since we experienced the pandemic, we have been focusing on more durable and easy-to-use designs. This is why the brands presented at New York Fashion Week have focused on a more discreet and minimalist aesthetic, taking characteristics of low-key luxury with an informal and relaxed style, incorporating pieces that adapt to daily use.
We see this reflected, for example, in tailoring that prioritizes perennial colors and versatile and gender-inclusive cuts.
For some time now the cuts of oversized blazers have been key, they are super comfortable, and who doesn’t like to feel elegant with a good blazer?
Blazers are an example of a piece that is timeless; all we need to do is add a stylish and modern touch. After a long period of recovery, tailoring now serves as the basis for a fashion that appeals to a variety of markets looking for durable clothing with smart, adaptable designs.
Many brands continue to follow a delicate but elaborate Modern Romantic direction, which is, in short, incorporating typically feminine design elements like ruffles, cinched waists, and lace, as well as a delicate palette of pastel colors.
The aesthetic that was introduced this year is largely subdued in style, ranging from sophisticated designs to more modern and rebellious designs.
Resort apparel has also become more polished to match the necessities of city life while still being appropriate for beach time.
Tailored pants and jackets are paired with crochet pieces and long flowing skirts in a relaxed manner with frayed ends.
This year, NYFW revived one of the season’s core trends, city dressing, which features an even more informal and effortless attitude to everyday wear.
Tank tops and knit dresses have entered fashion territory, taking a page from ’90s minimalism, to cater to consumers who appreciate simplicity and utility. With pliable materials in free, flowing forms and classic colors coupled with bursts of sparkle, minimalism generates long-lasting designs that express refinement.

Sustainability in NYFW?
Luxury, glamor, and extravagance have long been linked with the fashion industry. However, there has been a growing awareness of the industry’s environmental impact and a need for change in recent years.
The Green Fashion Show, a New York Fashion Week event, seeks to reimagine the future of sustainable fashion by highlighting the work of designers, businesses, and industry experts to promote a more conscientious approach to fashion ecology.
This event showed fashion’s transformational ability as a catalyst for positive change. The Green Fashion Show collaborated with environmentally concerned firms to offer creative solutions.
Dur Doux’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, for example, stole the show, demonstrating that sustainability and style are a potent combination. Through their shapes, textures, and colors, the clothes powerfully depicted the story of underwater life. These pieces, produced from environmentally friendly Italian fabrics, recyclable materials, and OEKO-TEX-certified fabrics, emphasized the brand’s dedication to sustainability.
However, the dedication extends beyond the runway; events like these represent the future of major fashion weeks, joining groups that share a vision of a greener fashion business.
- Furthermore, well-being and a healthy lifestyle are supported. I am thrilled that this relationship between sustainability, health, and fashion is beginning to emerge, utilizing the fantastic platform that is NYFW. Hopefully, acts like these will push industry standards to new heights, making sustainability more than simply a lesson, but a way of life.
- The fashion industry truly has the power to shape culture and influence consumer behavior. Through events like The Green Fashion Show, the industry can drive positive change and inspire others to adopt sustainable practices. As consumers become more aware of their environmental impact, brands that prioritize sustainability will have a competitive advantage.
