Menstrual products are some of those products whose impact on the planet is everything but beneficial; however, we need to use them either way, right?
If you’re here, it is probably because either you want to change to a greener option, or you’re looking forward to trying a new alternative that fits better into your lifestyle. You’re in the right place! We’ll be discussing the pros and cons of each option so you can choose which one to try.
Remember all of these have their bright side and their downside, but they are a lot better than those ordinary pads and tampons.
What are some sustainable period product options?
1. Biodegradable Pads
This is one of the easiest swaps since you only need to buy the pads you already use but from brands that make them with natural components. For example Bamboo and Organic Cotton.
Don’t worry, the fact that it is biodegradable doesn’t mean the pad will begin its process while you’re wearing it. They can take up to 2 years to biodegrade, so you’ll be safe to wear them for some hours. Just keep in mind that they are still disposable and will be part of a landfill for a while.
Biggest perk: The pad will be gone in a few years.
What we don’t like: It is still disposable.
2. Reusable pads
Depending on the brand, these can or can not be biodegradable, so always pay attention to the materials. Pads can be an easy swap for some, but for others can be really uncomfortable and time-consuming since you have to wash them after each use.
*depends on the brand*
Biggest perk: You can use the pad for years.
What we don’t like: You have to clean it after each use.
3. Period Panties
This is one of the most comfortable options you’ll find. Wearing period panties is like not being on your period at all. Of course, depending on the brand, it can be biodegradable or not.
Just like reusable pads, you need to clean your panties right after you wear them and this can be annoying for some.
*depends on the brand*
Biggest perk: They are very comfortable.
What we don’t like: You have to clean it after each use.
4. Menstrual Cup
It might be scary to try it for the first time but after you get the hang of it, it could be really easy to use since you only need one cup. After filling it you just unload it, rinse it and reuse it. The cup lasts about 12 hours without being changed.
Biggest perk: It can last a decade and it feels like not being in your period at all.
What we don’t like: It can be tricky at the beginning and it is not for everyone.
For us, these are the best alternatives to the ordinary period products we all have worn. Let us know if we’re missing another option, we would love to try it too!
